Jonathan In Kano, Promises To Eradicate Polio In 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan and his campaign team were yesterday overwhelmed by the mammoth crowd that received them at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally in Kano.
At the Polo Ground, venue of his 2015 presidential campaign rally in Kano, the president said he was greatly delighted at the massive crowd he met in the place despite the type of negative campaign by the opposition.
He thanked Kano youths for donating the sum of N2 million for him to buy his party’s nomination form, even as he assured them that his administration would continue to make young millionaires out of Kano through innovative measures.
“Let me use this occasion to appreciate the northern youths for donating N2 million for myself and the vice president to buy our nomination form. The donation was made in Kano and we have to use this opportunity to thank all of you for that,” Jonathan stated.
The president said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) would declare Nigeria polio-free this year, following the concerted effort of his administration to eradicate the deadly disease which had crippled a lot of young children in the country, especially in the north.
Recounting how Nigeria’s war against polio began, he said, “And as I am telling you now, in 2014 the WHO declared India free of polio and they declared Bangladesh free of polio. We would have been declared last year but because of our challenges. But let me reassure you that, insha Allah, WHO will declare Nigeria polio-free this year.”
Noting that Kano is a state known for education, agriculture, commerce and industry, the president said it is for this reason that the present administration had remained committed to working with the people of the state.
He added that the federal government is also ready to work with the incoming PDP governor in ensuring that the people do not just produce food, but also process and export food.
